​Stitch a Botanical Sampler Rooted in Personal History

Embroidery samplers have a rich history across cultures, dating back to at least the 15th century - a means of learning, documenting, and sharing different stitches and patterns in thread.  They were passed along trade routes, bequeathed in wills, shared between neighbors and friends and loved ones.  The designs were often botanical motifs, reflecting the daily experience of people whose lives were dependent on the natural world.  In this course, we will explore our own personal, ancestral and cultural connections to place, plants, gardens, and landscapes, and learn to translate these into stitch to create a modern, heirloom sampler based on personal history.

WHO IT'S FOR: 

Everybody!  You don't need any prior stitching experience.  We will be starting from scratch. (And, shh - you don't actually even need to stitch!  You may use the exercises to guide you in whatever medium you prefer - drawing, watercolor, writing, etc. - even just for reflection.)

WHAT WE'LL BE DOING:

30 lessons in 30 days will take you from threading a needle to finishing your piece.  Each lesson includes a new technique and a reflective prompt.  You will learn numerous methods of creating botanical designs in stitch and working creatively without a pre-determined design.  You'll also have a chance to reflect on various connections to nature and place.

WHEN IS IT: 

Whenever you want!  All lessons are pre-recorded and self-paced.  You may sign up now and go as fast or slow as you like.  

HOW MUCH IS IT?

This class is donation based. Access to a creative practice and community should be available to all people.  There are multiple tiers at which you can join, and if you can't afford to pay, we are still more than happy to have you!
